This article is a very basic list of steps in an international adoption.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Agency

The first step in International Adoption is to select the agency you wish to use.

  2. Step 2

    Application

The next step in an agency international adoption is to complete the agency’s application process.

  3. Step 3

    Home Study

The next step is to have a Home Study completed. ALL ADOPTION REQUIRE A HOME STUDY BE COPMPLETED. If the agency you have chosen to work with is local, they will usually complete the Home Study too. If your agency is in another state you will need to check with them on how to have a Home Study done. In most cases a local Social Worker can complete the Home Study and send it to your agency.

  4. Step 4

    Training

Some States and agencies require adoptive parents to complete some sort of childcare training.

  5. Step 5

    Dossier

A Dossier is a set of paperwork required by a foreign country for International Adoption.

  6. Step 6

    I-600A

In International Adoption a form I-600A and a copy of fingerprints is required through your local INS/CIS office for Immigration Approval.

  7. Step 7

    Referral

Once all the above is complete you will wait for your child referral. Referral times can vary between countries. A referral’s time frame can also be dependant on the gender, age, and race you have chosen.

  8. Step 8

    Travel

Once you have accepted your referred child you will most likely be required to travel to pick your child up. Travel times depend on your chosen country. For some two or more trips may be required for adoption so you will need to check with your chosen country’s regulations.

  9. Step 9

    Post-Placement

Once you return with your child there are several steps that need to be completed. These steps include post-placement visits by your adoption agency to fulfill your chosen country’s requirements, as well as, doing necessary steps to make your child a U.S. Citizen. Please consult with your agency in this matter. Most agencies will guide and assist you along the way.
