When you install a new program, registry creates a new entry for that program. If you uninstall or delete a program, it sometimes leaves behind some registry entries or values. You can improve system performance by deleting these unnecessary registry values. There are many registry cleaner softwares available online, which can clean up registry. This article will show you two methods of cleaning registry values after deleting or uninstalling any program. First method is AUTOMATIC removal. It uses FREE registry cleaner software called CCLEANER. This method is much safer, as it works within safe limits of deleting any registry value. Second method is MANUAL removal. It is potentially dangerous method which requires lot of expertise and knowledge about registry. Before you use any of these methods, you MUST backup your registry.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
AUTOMATIC Removal:
CCLEANER: This is the most popular FREE registry cleaner software available online. (It is also system optimization and privacy tool). Go to www.ccleaner.com. And click on ‘Download CCleaner now…’. (The direct link is provided in the resource section of this article for your convenience.)
Step2
Click on ‘Download from FileHippo.com’. It will open webpage for ccleaner download. Click on ‘Download Latest Version’. It will download the program.
Step3
Install the program. The installation is straight-forward. During installation, you will be asked for Install Options. Uncheck ‘Add yahoo! Toolbar…’ and also uncheck ‘ add run ccleaner option to recycle bin context menu’ and ‘Add open ccleaner.. option to recycle bin context menu’.
Step4
After installation, open CCleaner. Go to Registry.
Step5
Click on ‘Scan for Issues’. It will scan registry for any unnecessary entries.
Step6
After it finishes scanning, click on ‘Fix Selected Issues’. It will prompt to backup changes to registry. Click 'Yes'. And save it in known folder. (CCleaner works well within safe limits, so you probably won’t need it. CCleaner saves the file in Date-time format, so its easy to identify them).
Step7
After saving the backup file, you will be prompted to fix issues. Click on ‘Fix all selected issues’. That’s all. It should have removed major unwanted entries from registry.
Step8
MANUAL REMOVAL:
To do thorough cleaning of registry values, you can manually erase all the entries. Once again, this is slow and potentially hazardous method which requires expertise and knowledge of registry, so use it at your own risk.
Step9
Go to Start, Run and type ‘regedit’ and click Enter. This will open Registry Editor. (For windows xp, you may have to type ' regedt32')
Step10
Before you make any changes, you should create a ‘Restore Point’ by going to Start, Programs, Accessories, System tools, System Restore. And create new restore point.
(You can restore computer to this point, if something goes wrong during registry cleaning process.)
Step11
Now, come back to Registry Editor. Go to Edit and Find.
Step12
Type in any particular file or program name, you want to erase. Click Find.
Step13
Once you find entry, you can right click on it. And click delete to erase the entry.
Step14
You can press F3 key to find next instance of the entry. You can one by one delete all the instances of deleted program.

Tips & Warnings

  • Before you use any of these methods, you MUST backup your registry.
  • Be cautious, when you use manual method of deleting registry entry.
