Deadheading is the removal of old or spent flowers so the plant has a chance to redirect its energy to the plant instead of creating seeds. Most marigolds, petunias and geraniums will continue to bloom and grow all throughout the summer if you deadhead them regularly.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Marigold flowers
  • Petunia flowers
  • Geranium flowers
  • Fingers for pinching
  • Garden shears, if needed
  • Gloves, if needed
Step1
Identify those blooms that have faded.
Step2
For marigolds, with your fingers pinch the spent flowers just above the next flower on the stem.
Step3
For petunias, pinch the stem off of the spent flower.
Step4
For geraniums, pinch the stem off of the spent flower grouping. This flower will quickly look unkempt if not deadheaded regularly.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use garden shears if you find them to be easier for you.
  • If you are doing lots of flowers, gloves will protect your hands.
