The Second Amendment reads: "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." The interpretation of this amendment has recently been given by the Supreme Court to say that Americans have a right to own guns for self-defense and hunting. This strikes down many laws across the nation that make it illegal to carry a handgun as a common citizen. Still, it is not an absolute ruling. A person must follow handgun laws and follow common sense in being a handgun owner. Here are things you can do to insure safety of yourself and those around you if you choose to carry a gun.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • safety course
  • laws of your state
  • handgun
  • permit

Step1
First, decide WHY you want to own a handgun. Read about the laws, consequences and hazards of gun ownership. It can help cement your decision or cause you to rethink it. If you choose, go on to the next step.
Step2
Take a gun safety course from a recognized authority. Your local NRA chapter should have a class schedule or tell you where you can take a class. Their website is filled with information regarding all types of firearm instruction. The major gun manufacturing companies often give courses. Local, state and federal law enforcement are excellent resources too.
Step3
If you have other adults in the home encourage them to take classes as well, even if they have no desire to own a handgun. It will teach them respect for gun safety and help reinforce what you have learned.
Step4
Know your state and local laws. Most every state requires that you obtain a pistol permit before you can purchase a handgun. Requirements vary from state to state and sometimes county to county. Some are quite restrictive. On the opposite end of things, two states, Alaska [age 16] and Vermont [age 21] allow non-felons to carry without a permit.
Step5
Understand the liability that you will carry if you choose to own a handgun. Care must be taken to keep the handgun securely locked away from children and others who are not responsible. Many law enforcement and gun advocate organizations offer free gun locks. Prepare a place ahead of time if you are going to bring a handgun home.
Step6
Not all states are created equal when it comes to visiting with your handgun. If you plan to travel to another state know if the state you will be going to is a reciprocal state [means they will honor a permit from your state] . Know the laws of the states you will be visiting in.
Step7
By being knowledgeable of the fact that the gun can be a dangerous thing you will be more likely to respect it and follow safety measures to protect those around you.

on 7/11/2008 Well said. I advise everyone with children get a really good safe. Believe it or not, according to the book "Freakonomics", MANY more children die in swimming pools than by handguns. Thought I'd share that interesting tidbit. *****
