Things You'll Need:
- A good imagination
- A bit of free time
- Fanatic enthusiasm about someone or something
-
Step 1
Finding your premise.
There are a number of things to consider while planning your fan fiction and the first is 'What story was left untold'. Whether you source is a book, a movie, a video game, or a group of celebrities, there are always stories still waiting to be told.
The fist step in finding your Premise is to search for unexplained or poorly explained events or lose ends in the source. For example lets say you're writing a fan fiction about a celebrity; Lets say its a celebrity well known for never ever letting the paparazzi get a good shot. The explanation for that is because he simply doesn't like his photo taken but as thats a poor explanation (fiction wise) we could make better one. So we keep that in mind and search for other oddities in his behavior, or surprising events. Then we make one fabulous explanation that explains all of his odd behavior and use that as the premise of our story.
This technique also works well for writing fictions based on books or other media. Find the oddities, the unexplained and poorly explained events and make one big dramatic explanation that covers as many as you can. Then you'll have your premise. -
Step 2
Turning premise into plot.
This is can be the most difficult part. Once you have premise you have to turn it to a series of events that reveals and explores your premise. There are many ways to approach this, I suggest working backwards. Start with by dreaming up the perfect climax in respect to your premise. If you made a premise out of the celeb dodging paparazzi make the climax be the celeb saving his own life with a well placed photo or something. Dream up all the irony, emotion, and drama you can and squeeze it into one event, the climax.
Once you have your climax planned out writing plot is then the task of introducing the premise to your reader while leading them steadily and believably to the climax.
Start out thinking like the reader. They are very familiar with the source and if you hit them with your premise all at once they wont be comfortable with it. Each event in your plot should lead the reader slowly from the reality of the source to the reality of the premise and make sure the ride is as smooth as possible; try not to introduce too many new ideas at once.
The most important part of a fan fiction is making sure that its believable. Leave the source as unchanged as you can. -
Step 3
Turning plot into story.
Now you should have an event based plot that takes your reader on a roller coaster ride from the source (that you are both comfortable with and knowledgeable about) through the premise (which will seem to them natural and fitting) and right to the climax where you totally blow their socks off.
Now you have to make a story out of that string of events. From here the story should come to you naturally. All you have to do is put yourself in the place of your characters, take on their personality and traits, and start writing. From here the story will basically write itself; your only job is to guide the story in the right direction and to make sure it stays on track.
Any good fan fiction will evolve while you're writing it so don't be afraid to make changes to the plot or update the climax as you go -
Step 4
Publishing your fiction.
