How to Get a Certified Copy of Your Birth Certificate

There are many situations in which you may need an official copy of your birth certificate. In order to apply for a U.S. Passport, an official copy of the birth certificate is necessary. It is relatively easy and inexpensive to obtain an official birth certificate copy.

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet
  • Printer
  • Check or money order
  • Envelope and stamp
  1. Step 1

    First log onto the following government website:

    http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/howto/w2w/w2welcom.htm

  2. Step 2

    Then click on the state where the birth took place.

  3. Step 3

    The next screen shows the mailing address, cost and instructions. Make a photocopy of your identification (driver's license) and make out a check or money order in the amount shown payable to Vital Records Section.

  4. Step 4

    Write a brief letter requesting your official copy of your birth certificate and enclose the photocopy of your ID with the check or money order for the fee.Request a certified copy of your birth certificate for use in the Passport application.

  5. Step 5

    Call the number listed to verify the current fee amount.

  6. Step 6

    Mail letter.
