Imagine yourself: it's 8:30 on the dot, yet two lines are lit up before you can get in the door and plop yourself in the church cock-pit that is your desk.

Line 1 is a desperate woman in need of a listening ear, and line 2, a sales call. With 1 on hold, you gently extinguish the sales pitch, take a sip from your travel mug...and breathe. Aahhh, ready, set...go!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Love for God and your church
  • Need for employment
  1. Step 1

MUST HAVE A HEART FOR THE LORD: A good Church Secretary is constantly relying on God's direction, seeking His will for every situation in her personal and public life.

  2. Step 2

MUST HAVE COMPASSION AND UNDERSTANDING: Many times, people in desperate situations look for comfort in the church. For some people, the Church Secretary is often the first impression, not only of the church, but of Christianity or religion in general. It's important to look beyond the physical circumstances and realize they are a child of God in need.

  3. Step 3

MUST BE EFFICIENT & HARD WORKING: A good Church Secretary is well organized and manages her time wisely. She prepares weekly bulletins, monthly newsletters, correspondence and numerous other tasks. She doesn't procrastinate by putting off the small tasks, but sets about her work with a joyous spirit.

  4. Step 4

MUST BE A GOOD LISTENER WITH SINCERE HEART FOR ALL PEOPLE: Often times, if the Pastor is unavailable, the Church Secretary finds herself in the position of counseling those in desperate situations, offering a hug and a prayer.

  5. Step 5

MAINTAIN CONFIDENTIALITY: Because so many people may feel comfortable enough to share their hurts, weaknesses, marital problems and parenting troubles, the Church Secretary must maintain their trust and confidentiality by not repeating the information to others. She is a sounding board and friend, accommodating the needs of her church family and her community.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sensitive when dealing with others who may have experienced hurt or bad experiences in a church.
  • Be sensitive to the fact that each person is in a different place in their walk with the Lord.

on 6/30/2008 This is an excellent article. A church secretary is a special individual. It is a position best taken on only if the person feels it is the Lord's will for them. 5*****
