Tune Your Guitar From E Standard to Drop D by Ear

You need to try something new with your music, and your standard chords just aren't making the cut. Tune to Drop D for a whole new set of options.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • your Guitar
  • the ability to pick out pitches your guitar makes.
  1. Step 1

The first thing is to have a guitar that's already tuned to E Standard. This method is pretty simple, but it uses other strings on your guitar for reference. If the other strings are off, this won't work.

  2. Step 2

pluck the 4th and 6th strings at the same time. (That would be the fattest string and the 3rd fattest string.) It'll sound pretty bad, because their tunings are already close, but not in sync.

  3. Step 3

While the strings are still ringing, turn the tuning knob for the lowest string counterclockwise, which will lower the pitch. It should be about half a turn when you notice that the two strings you just plucked sound a lot better than they did before.

  4. Step 4

Keep plucking and tuning until the two strings make one, harmonious sound. When that happens, it means they are both officially tuned to D. Pick up your guitar and proceed to rock!!
