How to Correct the 3 Most Common Needlepoint Mistakes

(10 Ratings)
The three most common needlepoint mistakes happen to every stitcher from time to time. Knowing what they are and how to correct them will save you lots of energy and help achieve excellent stitching results.
Tapestry Needles
Mistake #1 - Using the wrong needle. Stitching with the wrong type or size needle can be frustrating and cause uneven work. Different types of embroidery require different needles. A tapestry needle is used for needlepoint because of its blunt point. It comes in various sizes from 18 to 24. The right needle will either fall through the hole of your canvas or just catch at the eye. Using a proper needle will eliminate uneven stitches.
Step2
Suitable Threads
Mistake #2 - Choosing unsuitable threads for the project. Choosing threads is one of the hardest but most satisfying parts of needlepoint preparation. There are so many new and colorful threads these days. However, the wrong types, sizes and color choices can ruin a project and wreck any enjoyment you receive from stitching. Use threads that are appropriate for your canvas size and color, and that will give you the coverage you need. Avoid heavy weight metallics or wool, if your design is lacy and airy.
Step3
Stitch Guide
Mistake #3 - Errors in working the stitches. Mistakes in counting the correct number of canvas threads frequently happen when using a needlepoint pattern or chart, thus causing the stitches to be misplaced. Once you become aware of your mistake, find the place where the stitch count was lost and backtrack by removing the thread. If the thread is damaged during removal, tie off and start again with a fresh length.
