The Internet is a treasure of multimedia. It offers images, videos, and audio. I thought it would be interesting to mix these media while writing a murder mystery and other story types.
As you write, think about different ways to tell your story. For example, in the introduction to a mystery I am writing called String Symphony (http://mozarteffect.today.com/2008/06/17/string-symphony-introduction/) I thought that music videos would enhance the story.
Step2
The introduction introduces a variety of musical forms, the sonata, concerto, quartet and symphony. I decided to use video examples for each musical form. For the sonata, I used 3 videos of the same piano sonata - the Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven. The first video displays a traditional piano performance. The second video displays a classical guitar transcription and the third video displays a jazz interpretation.
Step3
My goal was to use videos to illustrate the wide range of musical forms and interpretations. For the concerto form I selected a variety of writing styles from modern to classical. I used the different techniques for the other forms. I used different to express the musical qualities that words could not.
Step4
Videos or media does not just have to relate to the performance of music. For example, I wrote a short entry about the researcher, Alfred Tomatis (http://mozarteffect.today.com/2008/06/13/alfred-tomatis/). For this entry I used videos that described the results of his research.
Step5
Be creative. Think like a movie director. How does the video add to the story? Think like a composer or photographer. How does the music or pictures enhance the story line?
Step6
Since you are including other people's videos, you won't be able to copyright your story. At most, you could use some form of a Creative Commons license (http://creativecommons.org/).
Step7
This technique enhances writing and storytelling. It is also an effective method for business. It is useful for marketing, presenting an idea, and so on. The most important quality - have fun!
