Lacrosse is a game of endurance and finesse, so the preliminary concerns are to get in shape and to learn how to handle the lacrosse stick, which is an art in itself. In many ways lacrosse is similar to soccer in as far as players have to develop great stamina and wind in order to compete on the large playing surface that is roughly the same size as a soccer field. Once these basic skills are learned then players will learn how the game is played and then they will progress to the final stage of learning winning strategies. In the game of field lacrosse the object is to put the ball into the opponent’s goal, which is just a little bit bigger than an ice hockey, and is protected by a goalie.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Lacrosse stick
  • Lacrosse ball
  • Lacrosse helmet
  • Lacrosse gloves
  • Arm pads
  1. Step 1

Get in shape. The best way to do this is to run. Long distance running is helpful to build up endurance, but players need to also run repeated short dashes, also known as wind sprints.

  2. Step 2

Learn how to use the lacrosse stick, for in lacrosse the ball is carried and passed in a long stick that has a net at one end. Learning how to pass, catch and run with the ball takes time and players are better off if they learn the basic techniques at an early age.

  3. Step 3

Players need to learn all the rules and regulations of the game. Lacrosse is a contact sport, so there are rules and regulations, plus a penalty box for players, who violate the rules. One step to winning is to keep your players out of the penalty box, because as in ice hockey, players in the penalty box cannot be replaced.

  4. Step 4

Acquire all the necessary protective equipment for the players. This includes helmets, gloves and arm pads for all players, plus some extra protective padding for the goalie.

  5. Step 5

Teach the players the strategy of the game. The object of the contest is to get the ball past the goalie and into the net. Lacrosse is a fast-paced and higher scoring game than either soccer or ice hockey, so learning effective plans of attack is key to a winning strategy.

Tips & Warnings
  • Even though lacrosse is a contact sport, it is primarily a game of skill and finesse. Teams with many large and physical players seldom win in this sport. Speed, agility and the ability to control the ball with the stick are much more important.
  • Men's lacrosse involves body checking and checking the opponent's stick with your own stick. There is a spirit of sportsmanship here, where everyone involved must show some degree of restraint and common sense. Lacrosse should not be played like football , where there is a lot of body contact, but more like soccer or ice hockey, where striciter rules regulate the contact that is allowed.
