How to Make a Backyard Miniature Golf Course

Miniature golf is a fun activity that people of any age or skill level can participate in and even win. Your family will enjoy designing and building your very own backyard course, complete with your personal touches. Building a course is relatively cheap, as you will primarily use old, unwanted items and garage sale items to construct your course.

Step1

Decide where in your yard you want to place your course and how many holes you want. Don’t worry if your yard isn’t completely level. Hills and dips will make your course more interesting.

Step2

Mow your lawn before you start. Use an old hose or rope to lay out each green. When the hole looks the way you want it to, line it with sturdy pieces of leftover lumber, bricks or concrete blocks. Concrete blocks can also be angled on the green, permitting balls to bank off the side of the block.

Step3

Buy old putters at a garage sale or make your own by duct taping a block of wood to wooden rods bought from a home improvement store.

Step4

Make hole markers using garden stakes. Cut out a flag shape from a piece of light-colored fabric and write the hole number on the flag with a waterproof marker. Tape the flag to the stake and place next to the hole.

Step5

Design scorecards on the computer using your word processing package. Print the scorecards on sturdy cardstock.

Step6

Use a plastic cup or small flower pot for each hole. Use a shovel to dig a hole so that the cup or pot is flush with the ground. This is an important step, as you will want the ball to be able to easily fall into the hole.

Step7

Sand traps are easy to make. Dig out a small, shallow area of the green and fill it with sand.

Step8

Old plastic containers filled with water make nice water hazards. Dig a hole deep enough to cover the depth of the container. For fun, add a toy sailboat or rubber duck.

Step9

Every miniature golf course needs obstacles. An old tricycle in the middle of the green makes a sturdy, cheap obstacle. Pieces of old pipe or wood also make good obstacles. Place of piece of pipe in the middle of a green leading to straight to the hole. Dig down about an inch for the entire length of the pipe so that the ball can easily enter the pipe.

Tips & Warnings

Yard sales are a good place to find obstacles. Obstacles should be heavy enough to withstand wind and rain. Use your imagination to find creative obstacles.
