If you thought sharing a futon in college was bad, now that the challenges of entry-level jobs and being in the real world are partnered with finding the right roommate. Even if you never quite got it in college, you can correct your roommate woes by choosing a post-college roommate with these tips.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check your networks to see if any friends of friends may be moving to the area that you are. These are often the best references as randomly finding a roommate can lead to various cultural and lifestyle differences. Because your network often includes people with similar backgrounds and beliefs as yourself, this is the first place to check.

  2. Step 2

Putting the word out with your employer or company can also help to find a roommate. Chances are various new hires will be relocating to large areas and may be looking for housing.

  3. Step 3

Explore online roommate finders which can help to spread your search horizons. While these people may not be in your network you may find someone with a common thread who may be a good fit. See some online roommate finders listed in the resources section of this article.

  4. Step 4

Reviewing your short-list of roommates found from these sources, try to find someone who lives a similar lifestyle as you, but also has lifestyle differences that you can put up with. Don’t be modest when it comes to the truth of what you can accept concerning lifestyles. If something has the potential to bother you, reconsider or make a compromise.
