How to Sew Oven Mitts

Oven mitts are a practical sewing project that can make a thoughtful gift. You may want to sew your own oven mitts if you have a particular color or fabric you’d like to match, or if you want to make a custom style of oven mitt, such as a whimsical mitt that looks like animal. You may also want to make your own oven mitts if you need a special size, such as oven mitts that are extra large or extra small. For most oven mitts, you’ll need two layers of fabric: an outer layer, such as cotton, and a thick lining, such as polar fleece. If you use thick, pre-quilted fabric, however, you can skip the lining.

Instructions

  1. Sew Oven Mitts

    • 1

Draw an oven mitt pattern that’s 3/4 inch larger all the way around than you want the finished oven mitt. If you want to trace an oven mitt you already have, draw the pattern about 3/4 inch away from the edge of the mitt. Cut out the paper pattern.

    • 2

Fold the cotton fabric in half, right sides together. Pin the pattern to the fabric and cut around it, then remove the pin.

    • 3

Fold the fleece in half. Pin the pattern to the fleece and cut around it, then remove the pin. Cut off the bottom 3/4 inch from the lower end of each piece of fleece.

    • 4

Fold the lower edge of each cotton piece 1/4 inch toward the wrong side of the fabric. Press the fold flat.

    • 5

Place one piece of fleece on the wrong side of each piece of cotton. Fold the lower edge of each piece of cotton over about 1/2 inch, onto the fleece. Stitch the folded edges in place using matching thread. This will hem the lower edges of the oven mitt.

    • 6

Place the two halves of the oven mitt on top of each other, with the fleece sides together. Pin the layers together, then stitch around the edges using 1/4 inch seam allowance. Leave the lower end of the oven mitt open.

    • 7

Turn the oven mitt inside out. Stitch around the edges of the oven mitt again, leaving the lower end open, just inside the first line of stitching. Turn the oven mitt right side out.

    • 8

Repeat steps 2 through 7 to sew a second oven mitt.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may want to make a set of matching oven mitts and pot holders as a gift.

  • Use caution when working with scissors, pins, irons and sewing machines.

  • Oven mitts are not flame proof. Use caution when handling hot objects.
