How to Get Exercise With a Baby

There's a bizarre paradox involved in working off baby weight. On one hand, after you've recovered a bit from giving birth, you may be eager to become more active and get back into shape. On the other hand, suddenly you have to figure out how to get exercise with a baby, and that can be surprisingly hard. While you might be able to throw on a yoga video during baby's nap, that time is precious, and you may need it for other things (like sleeping). Luckily there are plenty of ways to be active while keeping your baby entertained at the same time.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Walk, walk, walk. This is probably the single most effective solution because it has so many benefits. Many babies really enjoy getting out of the house and seeing some scenery every day, especially if the weather is nice. Using a stroller is fine, but carrying baby in a sling may be even more comfortable for newborns, and has the added benefit of an increased work out for you. Walk as long and as briskly as you feel comfortable. If you do your errands this way, it's even more convenient!
Step2
Put on some music and dance. Little babies generally enjoy being carried, rocked and gently bounced while you dance around, while toddlers are more likely to join in themselves. You don't have to worry about your moves, because in this case the sillier the better. This can be a surprising amount of fun, and a good solution for days when it's inconvenient to leave the house.
Step3
Take a parent and baby class. There are exercise classes for parents and babies available in many areas, on a variety of activities from swimming to yoga. Small babies may be totally indifferent to these activities, but they can be fun and convenient way to get exercise with a baby. The most helpful aspect is that no one in these classes will be concerned if your child causes a disruption, and activities are tailored to work around kids.
Step4
Join a gym with child care. Lots of exercise facilities offer babysitting while parents are working out. If you like working out in exercise clubs anyway this can be a good choice, because it's free with the price of membership. This can also be a good first way to get some time to yourself, since you're likely to be busy for a relatively short time and instantly available in case of emergencies.
Step5
Play active games. Most kids love playing in their backyards or the park. Even if you're stuck inside you can do some of the same things. Run around, play ball or do gymnastics with your toddler, or jump around and play tickle games or peek-a-boo with your little baby. Even if they're too small to move much their own selves, babies can be highly entertained by these types of antics.
Step6
Once baby is able to hold his or her head up securely, get a baby bike cart or seat and go riding together. This is another great way to get out of the house and enjoy the weather, and sometimes more convenient than walking for running errands. Don't forget helmets for both of you!

Tips & Warnings

  • If all else fails, nap time or evening yoga is actually a pretty good fall back. You can do it in a small space in your own home and it's generally quiet, so it shouldn't interfere with baby sleeping. Plus, it's relaxing for you too.
  • If you're out of the habit of exercising, start slowly. You will probably be able to work up to your previous levels (or more), but building up to these levels gradually is safer and more comfortable.
