Children love video games. But how do you know what games to buy for your child that they will be able to enjoy for hours? Video games can be kind of expensive and you want to make sure that the video games you are choosing are not only appropriate, but something that they can enjoy for a long time. Another thing you will want to consider is if the video game you are choosing is educational for the child who will be playing it.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
If your child has played video games in the past, you will be able to get a feeling as to what your child enjoys playing. There are a lot of games that come in series, so naturally the best thing to get for a child would be the next game in the series. A lot of those games start off where the last one left off, so if they have not played one before, you may want to start at the beginning of the series.
Step2
What is the age of the child? A lot of the video games that are available for the younger child seem to be quite educational. Sometimes you cannot look at the packaging age guidelines because all children seem to learn at different stages. Read the back of the box and see what kind of skills are taught in the video game to see if it would be right for your child.
Step3
Price can be a factor in selecting video games. A lot of the new release video games come with a hefty price tag. Maybe your child can contribute with their allowance, or they could wait a month or so after the video game is released and find it on sale or find it at a video game store used. A lot of big gamers will trade their old games in right after they complete them to get some money back. This is a great way to save some money.
Step4
Bring your child to the store with you. They will be able to tell you what video games that they think they would like to play. Then, as the parent you can decide which one you think would be best for them. Also, take into consideration each video game has a rating on it. This will give you an indication what age group is the game intended for, and it will also tell you what types of violence you may see in the game so that you can make an informed decision.
Step5
Play the video games with your child. If they are little, teach the child how to play the game. It brings families together, which can be hard to do with our busy lives. It makes video games a lot more fun for the whole family.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be persistent with your child and their video game activity.
  • Play together as a family.
  • It's never easy to tell a child when they can do something, but be stern.
