How to Drive in Adverse Weather Conditions

Driving always takes skill and constant alertness. However, when driving in adverse weather conditions, it is very important that you travel with even more care than you would if the conditions were more favorable. If you do not use very precise caution when driving in adverse weather conditions you will end up either having a costly accident.

  1. Step 1

    Pay attention to your speed. Speed kills in almost every aspect. When traveling in bad weather, travel at least 5-10 miles under posted speed limit and never ever speed over the limit. In some jurisdictions, you have to drive at least 5-10 miles under posted limits in order to avoid a traffic ticket.

  2. Step 2

    Be alert at all times. Being alert at all times can help you when driving in adverse weather conditions. Pay careful attention to road warning signs that display hazardous conditions. Safe driving also means to paying attention to the traffic around. For example, if another driver is speeding or driving recklessly.

  3. Step 3

    Practice safe driving techniques. Have your seatbelt on be well rested when behind the wheel during adverse weather conditions. It is very important that you stay off the road if you are exhausted or drunk to eliminate the possibility of hurting someone especially in torrential rains and snowy weather.

  4. Step 4

    Prepare your vehicle before you travel in adverse weather conditions. Before you go out on the road in adverse conditions, your car should be well prepared. Make sure your tires are properly cared for, apply chains to your tired and make sure all of your fluids are properly filled in your car in order to lessen your chances of getting stranded. It is recommended that you listen to your radio or watch your T.V. to listen out for adverse weather conditions to give yourself the advantage of planning ahead.
