Oily hair is hair that needs to be washed pretty often, but commercial shampoos often contain chemicals that can harm your hair. When you need to wash your hair every day, but you don't want it to end up dried out, frizzed out, or even falling out, make your own shampoo. It's organic, herbal and kind to both your hair and the environment.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 7 oz. filtered or bottled water
  • 1 oz. liquid liquid castile soap
  • 3 tbsp. dried (or 1/2 c. fresh) peppermint leaves
  • 3 tbsp. dried (or 1/2 c. fresh) lemongrass
  • 8 oz. plastic or glass bottle
  • Glass or pyrex container
  • Strainer
  1. Step 1

Measure out 7 oz. of water (one cup minus two tablespoons). Filtered or bottled water is best, but if you need to use tap water, that's fine as well.

  2. Step 2

Place the herbs into the filter and put the filter over the glass container. Boil the water and pour it over the herbs.

  3. Step 3

Squeeze the herbs against the filter with the back of the spoon, but do not allow any bits of herb to fall into the water or else you'll need to re-strain it. Cover the container. You can use a piece of foil if it doesn't have a lid. Let the herbs steep in the water for a half hour.

  4. Step 4

Pour one ounce (two tablespoons) of liquid castile soap into the bottle you'll be using to store the shampoo while the herbs are steeping. Set aside.

  5. Step 5

Pour the cooled herb water slowly into the liquid soap in the bottle. Cap the bottle and shake gently to mix.

Tips & Warnings
  • This shampoo will last for about one year so it's best to label it with the date.
