How to Find an Au Pair

More and more working parents are looking for childcare inside their homes, rather than at daycare centers or after-school programs. Hiring an au pair is the perfect choice for those families who want to bring someone new into their home for help with childcare. Here's how to find one.

1. Search your local listings. There are many childcare providers in your area who would be willing to work as an au pair, you don't always have to go outside your area, or even country to find a qualified au pair. Check Craigslist, check the newspaper, or read bulletin boards at children's libraries.

2. Research some agencies. There are several au pair agencies out there who will assist you in finding your perfect au pair, however, they come with a price. The price is justified, however, as part of the up-front fees go toward airline flights, training and background checks for your new au pair. If you do use an agency, ask them if they currently have any "in country" au pairs. This can save you thousands on the airline flight.

3. Remember, that unless you find an au pair who lives in your local area and is willing to work at your home full time, you will have to provide room and board for this new member of your family. These costs can add up. You will need to also pay for car insurance and any outings you ask your Au Pair to take your children on.

4. Au pairs generally make around $150 to $200 a week. Don't let this low price fool you. As mentioned previously, the general costs of living are added, and you're essentially adding one more person to your family, so you need to budget accordingly.
