Pattern overlays can add texture, color and detail to your Photoshop project. They can also help highlight important items, and define sections of your document. Used correctly, they can turn any plain document into a professional looking publication. There are dozens of standard overlays included in Photoshop and you can create or download an unlimited number of overlays from the Internet or online vendors.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Photoshop software
  1. Step 1

Open a new or existing document in Photoshop.

  2. Step 2

Create a new layer and add new text or graphics, or select an existing element by clicking on it's layer. You can add a new layer by clicking on the "Layer" pull-down menu or pressing "Shift+Ctrl+N."

  3. Step 3

Double-click on the layer to bring up the "Layer Style" menu, then click on the "Pattern Overlay" button. Be sure that the check box is selected. Also, remember to check the "Preview" box so that you can see your changes in real time.

  4. Step 4

Use the "Pattern" details menu to select an overlay from the standard library of patterns or upload your own. The opacity, scale and blend mode tools can be used to alter the pattern to fit your vision. Try experimenting with these adjustments to find new effects for your work.

  5. Step 5

Click on "OK" to apply your pattern to the selected element. There should now be an "Fx" designation on the layer you chose indicating that an effect has been applied to that layer. Click on the "Fx" button to alter your effect.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure to experiment with the variables in every effect. This will help you to better understand the effect and find new ones.
  • Adding patterns to text provides a great accent to headers and titles.
  • Be careful not to go overboard with patterns. This can clutter your image and take away from it's design or purpose.
  • Some patterns that you get off the internet are copyrighted and will require a payment. Be sure to read all fine print.
