      Complete form DS-11 if you are applying for a passport the first time. It is available at your local post office or on the Department of State's website for download (see Resources). Fill out the form completely and be sure to include your social security number.

      Include photos, payment, and documents with the application form. It is imperative for you to provide all of the information required or your passport will not be processed. Make sure you include an authorized copy of your birth certificate, the correct fee, as well as your two passport photos that are in color and 2x2 inches.

      Make an appointment at a passport acceptance facility. You must sign your application in person and under oath. Then, you will place everything in an envelope and send it to the passport processing facility for your state. The address is on your application form.

      Expect your passport in four to six weeks. You can check the current processing times on the Department of State website. Keep in mind that some passports will be processed faster than others and passports mailed on the same day may not be processed in the same time frame. Check your passport's progress on the Department of State's website to find out when it was received and when it is approved.
