Instructions

    • 1

Minimize. Maui doesn't have a formal dress code, so you don't need to bring lots of outfits for special events. You'll be just as welcome in shorts and a T-shirt as you are in a dressy outfit, so pack for three or four days of clothing and plan to run the washer once or twice during your stay.

    • 2

Pack one slightly nicer outfit per family member. You'll likely head to a luau or out to at least one nice meal, so pack one outfit to make the event even more special. You won't need the outfit to get good service, but it can help set the evening apart if you bring one.

    • 3

Grab a swimsuit, hat and sunglasses for that ever-important pool and beach time. Maui abounds with lovely beaches and stellar pools, so make sure you've got at least one suit. Of course, bring a hat and sunglasses to avoid a nasty sunburn from the Hawaiian sun.

    • 4

Ask the children to put out a selection of favorite items. If they're old enough to be dressing themselves, then have the children put together two or three outfits they'd like to bring. You can edit as necessary, but it helps to get their input on the clothes prior to packing the case. Also have them choose a few good books and a couple of favorite toys to play with.

    • 5

Pack toiletries that work for your travel plans. If you're carrying luggage on, be sure you've adhered to the latest TSA guidelines for liquids and gels. If you're checking luggage, then you've got more freedom with your toiletry sizes, but remember that Maui has plenty of stores from which you can purchase anything you need, so don't bring the whole medicine cabinet.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you're planning on packing golf clubs, they need to be checked as luggage.

  • Remember that some airlines are now charging for checked baggage.
