Step 1
Be sure that you really want to remove your tattoo. Once you begin the removal process, which is slightly uncomfortable, there is no turning back. It is also quite costly to remove your tattoo.
-
Step 2
Find a reputable physician who specializes in tattoo removal. his can be done through word of mouth (if you know someone else who had one removed) or doing some research online using search engines. Make sure when you schedule a consultation with the physician you decide on, that you feel completely comfortable with her and that she explains the process and expected results.
-
Step 3
Laser tattoo removal is the only removal process that can be used on large tattoos (unlike small tattoos whereby dermabrasion or excision can be used to remove them). This process is performed by using one of three different types of lasers to send pulses of light into the skin, breaking up the pigment of the tattoo. Cells in your body then remove the broken down pigment over the following weeks.
-
Step 4
More than one treatment is necessary in most cases to remove the entire tattoo. Often times, shots of a numbing agent or numbing creams are administered prior to the procedure. It may take up to several months for the entire tattoo to be removed, depending on its size. It is a slow process, but the results can be amazing!
-
Step 5
Make sure to follow up with the physician you saw to have your tattoo removed, to ensure that all of it has been successfully irradiated. Stick to any aftercare rules they give you, such as staying out of the sun or applying antibiotic creams.
