Create a Concise Resume

Your resume goes before you to a potential new employer and creates an instant first impression on your behalf. If your resume is long and wordy, an employer might lose interest before even getting to the highlights. Revamp your resume so that it is clear, concise and sure to be noticed.

Instructions

    • 1

Ask someone you trust to review your resume and make suggestions on what you might want to remove. Consider who it is you are asking. For example, your mother may feel that everything you do is noteworthy, and therefore might not be the best editor. If you have a good friend or family member who is in a hiring position, that might be the perfect person to ask.

    • 2

Avoid information that is not relevant to the job you are seeking. Your volunteer work might be admirable and your hobby is probably really cool, but unless it pertains to your career, save it for the interview.

    • 3

Do away with your summer job in high school. If you have a lengthy career, stick to what you have been doing for the past decade or so. Of course, if you are twenty or so, you can and absolutely should include the after-school job.

    • 4

Choose a number of bullet points and use three for each position you list. This will give the employer insight into what you did in each position without overkill.

    • 5

Eliminate adjectives and get straight to the verbs. Instead of stating that you were "Responsible for providing quality control" simply state that you "Provided quality control". And never start with "I".

Tips & Warnings

  • Use abbreviations sparingly, and only if they are widely common ones.

  • Don't try and squeeze more information onto a page by using a teensy-weensy font.

I have what I fear is too much experience and worry that my resume is not concise enough. The point about using 3 bullet points is helpful. Thank you.
