Things You'll Need:
- Design software (optional)

Step 1
Before you can begin designing a wedding ring, you really need to know your budget. Otherwise, you could end up with a $20,000 design and a $5,000 budget. Once you know your budget, then you will automatically know your limits when it comes to diamond size and quality as well as the type of metal to use.
-
Step 2
Decide what metal to use. Does the bride-to-be like white or yellow metals? You can choose from yellow gold, white gold, silver, and platinum. If you want to save some money on the setting to buy a bigger diamond, go for white gold over platinum. Silver is not as popular for wedding rings, but if you are on a budget or allergic to other metals it's a good one to use.
-
Step 3
Consider what size diamond to use. Most women want at least a 1-carat diamond in their ring. However, not everyone can afford this. A half carat to a full carat are good sizes if you are on a budget. Determine whether you want a bigger diamond while compromising on the clarity and color, or if you want a smaller diamond that is visually flawless.
-
Step 4
You could design a simple band with a solitaire, or you could add accent diamonds. If you go this route, consider how the smaller diamonds will accent the larger center stone. Go for something original or similar to a ring your fiancee really loves.
-
Step 5
Once you have designed the engagement ring, you need to design a matching band because you won't be able to find one anywhere that matches perfectly. Allow the band to complement the engagement ring without competing with it. A few diamonds that are the same as the accent diamonds on the engagement ring will be pretty.
