How to Shine Hardwood Floors

Hardwood floors add an elegance to your home. A hardwood floor will dull over time. Walking on the floors can dull them; however when they are shining and clean the look is fantastic. There are many ways in which to make a hardwood floor shine.

Things You'll Need:

  • Broom
  • Scatter rugs
  • Vinegar
  • Olive oil
  • Spray bottle
  • Knee pads
  • Cotton cloth rags
  • Polyurethane floor wax
  • Soft mop
  1. Step 1

    Use a sturdy broom to sweep the floor regularly, and keep the floor as clean as possible.

  2. Step 2

    Use scatter rugs throughout your rooms. The use of rugs on your hardwood floor will help to maintain the finish. Scatter rugs will reduce the risk of scuff marks and dirt from embedding itself into the floors.

  3. Step 3

    When you are cleaning a hardwood floor minimal water should be used. Mop your floor with warm water. Use a soft mop or dampened wet cloth to clean the floor. Do not leave the water on the floor.

  4. Step 4

    To get a good shine, it may take you getting down on your hands and knees to shine the floor. Use a knee pad to comfort your knees while you are shining the floors. You can make your own polish by mixing equal amounts of olive oil and white vinegar in a spray bottle. Apply a thin mist to the floor, spray in small areas, rub the solution into the hardwood floors.

    Use a soft cotton cloth to wipe off the sprayed on solution. Use another clean cloth to buff the area. Then repeat the procedure until the entire floor has been cleaned and buffed.

  6. Step 6

    Another procedure would be to purchase a polyurethane cleaner. The polyurethane cleaners are manufactured by hardwood floor manufacturers and are easy to use. Mix four parts water and one part cleaner into a spray bottle.

  7. Step 7

    Spray a fine mist onto the floor. Spray in small areas. Get down on your knees and use a knee pad for your comfort. Take a clean cotton cloth to wipe the polyurethane into the wood. Wipe the surface dry. Using another cloth and buff it to a shine.

  8. Step 8

    If your hardwood floor does not regain its shine, you may have to hire a professional to refinish the floor. Once the floor has been refinished be sure that you keep it clean.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not leave a lot of moisture on your floor. Keep it clean of dirt and dust.
