Growing a vegetable garden is a wonderful way to combat the high costs of feeding a family these days. It is also a good way to get the entire family together in a positive family experience that has many science lessons with some many benefits.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A sunny spot in your lawn
  • Seeds
  • Water faucet with a hose attached
  • rotary tiller
  • shovel or spade
  • a hoe
  • a rake
  • a trowel
  • fertilizer
  1. Step 1

Decide which type of vegetables you wish to grow in the garden. Some vegetables are easier to grow then others, and if this is the first time, you have decided to grow a garden you need to know which vegetables grow easier. Lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, and onions are great vegetables to grow in the first year of gardening.

  2. Step 2

Choose the location; a garden is better suited for a place along a fence or a place, which is not in the direct pathway through the yard. The location of the garden needs to be sunny most of the day. It should also be within reach of the water hose should you need it.

  3. Step 3

Prepare the soil with a rotary tiller, so that the plants have a better environment in which to grow in a garden. You can rent a rotary tiller in many gardening centers around the country, barrow from a friend or even buy one if you plan to use it yearly. Once you have used the rotary tiller once through the garden, sprinkle fertilizer on the entire area, and mix it in using a rake or trowel.

  4. Step 4

Purchase tomato, and pepper plants from a nursery, farmer’s market, or a local department store. One can also purchase lettuce seeds and onion bulbs at those locations. If you wish to grow vegetables from seeds then it is important to start the seeds inside during the spring at least six weeks before you plant them.

  5. Step 5

Place the plants in your garden at least 12 inches apart in rows, one type of plant per row. Make sure to leave plenty of room in between your rows to walk and kneel when you have to pull the weeds.

Tips & Warnings
  • Water your garden daily with the hose if it does not rain that day, and pull the weeds as needed.
  • Use tomato steaks if needed to keep the heavy plants upright.
  • Add fertilizer and water as needed to keep healthy plants.
