Controlling the aperture on your Canon XH A1 is the best way to ensure that enough light is being used to capture the setting you are filming. By setting the aperture yourself, you will be able to compensate for changes in sunlight, indoor lighting and other sources of light. You will also be able to focus on objects both near and far without worrying about losing focus.

How to Use the Aperture Priority Mode on a Canon XH A1

Step1
Find the aperture priority mode button. It's located on the power dial. Press the button marked 'Av'. This will allow you to control the aperture while other functions are controlled by the camera.
Step2
Locate the aperture control ring. It's the first ring when you're looking down at the camera (the ring that's furthest away from the lens).
Step3
To control the amount of light that enters the camera, move the ring back and forth. You can view the changes in light by placing your hand in front of the lens. Look at the screen to determine the amount of light you will need. In the upper left hand corner of the viewing screen, you will notice an Av icon. Next to it are F stop values. The higher the number, the darker the picture will be.
Step4
Adjust the aperture during filming if the light quality changes to maintain a consistent amount of light.
Step5
Before filming, make any necessary adjustments to the aperture on your camera. Take sample shots from different areas so you will know when to make adjustments during filming.
