A Vonage phone is an inexpensive way to get phone service into your home. Unlike the bigger companies Vonage is reasonably priced. The hookup for Vonage has to go through a modem. That is the only way you can use them. If you do not have a modem for your Internet, then you will not be able to use Vonage phone service.

How to Set Up a Vonage Phone

  1. Step 1

Sign up for an account through Vonage. They will mail you out supplies to install to your computer. You will not be able to do anything without the stuff they send out to you. They will also mail you an instruction manual that goes over the steps to hook up your Vonage phone.

  2. Step 2

Make sure you have received everything you are supposed to get to hook up your phone. Vonage will send you a small modem that will be plugged into your Internet modem. You will also receive two cables, and a stand to hold your modem. A power supply and instructions will come too. It is important that you verify you have received everything so that you are not missing and will be charged for anything.

  3. Step 3

On the back of the Vonage modem there are phone jacks for Internet and Ethernet. The Ethernet cable plugs into the back of your computer. The Internet one plugs into the back of your Internet modem. Make sure you plug these into the right spot or your phone will not work.

  4. Step 4

Plug in your power cord so that everything charges up. On the front of the Vonage modem you will see three lights they are Ethernet, Internet, and power. Internet should be blinking and the other two will stay lit up all of the time. If it does not look like this then you should re-check your connections to make sure that everything was set up properly.

  5. Step 5

Hook up your telephone to the modem by inserting it into the back of the Vonage modem. There will be a slot that says Phone 1 there is a sticker covering the jack for Phone 2, only remove this if you have two phone lines. If you have a cordless phone make sure that it is charged before you do this. After you have plugged the phone line in, your Vonage phone should work now.
