When packing, try to bring only the necessities. Almost all air-travel companies now charge passengers to check their bags. Most of the major airlines charge $15 for the first bag and $25 for each one after. Try to keep baggage to a minimum while still bringing all the things that you need. Most airlines allow two free carry-on items that are 50 pounds or less and fit in the overhead bins. Take advantage of this and carry on your small bags instead of checking them.

Airplane flights are ridiculously expensive these days. This can be even more of a problem if you are traveling with children or in a group. Instead of flying to your destination, consider taking a train or bus if possible. Train and bus fares are much more reasonable. The trip will be a little longer, but you can find ways to keep entertained and make it enjoyable. Bring a laptop, portable DVD, or MP3 player to make your journey more pleasant.

If you have the choice, consider vacationing somewhere that is not too far from home. Choosing a place that is driving distance from your home will help you save money. Even though gas prices have risen, driving is in most cases still cheaper than flying.

Consider vacationing within the United States. There are many beautiful places to visit in the U.S and traveling will be less expensive than if you vacationed in another country. There are lovely resorts in Maine, Pennsylvania, Florida and California to name a few.
