A giant grouper is one of the most exciting types of fishing you can catch. Grouper can grow to well over 100 pounds and there have been reports of giant grouper that tip the scales at 400 and even 800 lbs. These monsters live in shallow water near bridges and piers and can be caught at night without a boat. It's one reason they are a well-known and exciting fish.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Heavy action rod 8 to 10 feet
  • Large deep sea reel
  • 300 yards of 120 lb. test mono fishing line
  • 3 yards of 250 lb. mono
  • 8/0 hook
  • Wire leader
  1. Step 1

Spool a large deep sea reel with 300 yard or more of 120 lb. or heavier mono filament fishing line and attach it to a heavy action rod that is at least 8 to 10 feet long.

  2. Step 2

Thread the mono filament through a 5- to 8-oz. sinker, depending on the current where you will be fishing.

  3. Step 3

Tie a 3-foot shock leader, a section of 250 lb. mono filament, to a swivel and then attach the swivel to the end of your line. Use a red bead to prevent the sinker from banging against the swivel.

  4. Step 4

Tie on a 7/0 or 8/0 hook, or to a combo of a wire leader and 7/0 or 8/0 hook to the end of the shock leader.

  5. Step 5

Catch a large fish, either a small tarpon, a large lady fish, or buy a large squid at the super market. This will be your bait.

  6. Step 6

Hook the bait through the eyes and back and then cast your bait into the water. Let it lay near the bottom and wait for a strike. When you feel a hit, set the hook and hang on.

Tips & Warnings
  • Go at night to increase your odds for monster grouper. You can fish piers or bridges as that is where grouper usually hang out. In Tampa, Florida, the Sky Way Pier on Rt. 275 is a good choice. But any pier in the South where there is depth of at least 25 feet, and plenty of food for grouper is a good choice. When fishing from a pier or bridge, you will need a rope and hook to land your "keeper" fish.
  • Grouper are a protect species in Florida and other states. You are not allowed to raise giant grouper out of the water, so cut your line once you bring the fish to the surface. Many giant grouper will require a large gaff and several men to haul it out of the water.
