How to Create a Bitmap

Perhaps you are wondering just what a bitmap is and what you need to do to create one. A bitmap is a type of digital picture that is made up of small rectangles of colors within a grid. Those small rectangles are called pixels, and the filename ends with ".bmp". If you have a need to create a bitmap from an image, such as a digital photo, here are a few ways that you can accomplish this. Most pictures from digital cameras are JPEG files (.jpg) and can be easily converted by several software programs.

Check your computer to see if you already have an image editing software program that came installed on your computer. For example, if you have Microsoft Office on a PC, you will have a program called "Paint". (There are many programs that also are installed with the software that comes with digital cameras and even photo development and printing services.) First, click on the green "start" button at lower left on your desktop, then "All Programs" with the green arrow next to it. Select "Accessories", then look for the program called "Paint" and double click it to start the program.

Check all the programs that you have if you don't have Microsoft Paint, because there are many image editing programs that will work in almost exactly the same simple way to save images as bitmaps. Some examples are Microsoft Photo Editor, Adobe Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, Google's free Picasa and the freeware Gimp that will perform many other functions as well and enable you to edit and manipulate images.
