Magic is quite real. Pretending it is real is like pretending the bullets in a gun are not real. If someone is out to hurt you with magic, not paying attention can get you very hurt. The only time this advice will work is when they don't really know how to use magic against you. As in physics, a force needs to act on another force. It's best protected from by deflecting, reflecting, blocking, and/or dispelling.
