How to Make Felt Ornaments
Felt ornaments are a great way to dress up your Christmas tree this year. Use simple shapes, cookie cutters or stencils to create your special felt ornaments and embellish with an assortment of beads, sequins, buttons and ribbon. Make one or a whole set that will give you a charming heirloom for years to come. You could easily pick a theme and a tree for every room in the house and decorate until your heart is content.
Things You'll Need
- Felt in assorted colors
- Sewing machine
- Matching thread
- Scissors
- Cookie cutters, simple shapes or stencils
- Pins
- Sewing needle
- Stuffing
- Beads, sequins, buttons and ribbon
- Freezer paper
- Iron
- Pencil
Instructions

Trace the desired shape for your felt ornament using a cookie cutter, simple shapes or a stencil on the paper side of freezer paper.

Iron the freezer paper, wax side down, to a piece of felt.

Cut out the felt shape of your felt ornament and peel the freezer paper off.

Place the felt shape on top of another piece of felt and pin.

Loop a three inch piece of ribbon in half and insert the ends between the felt pieces at the top of your felt ornament for a hanger.

Sew a scant 1/4 inch around the cut out shape of your felt ornament using the sewing machine and matching thread. Leave a small opening.

Using the stuffing, stuff the ornament through the opening.

Using the sewing machine, stitch the opening of your felt ornament closed.

Hand stitch and embellish your felt ornament with an assortment of beads, sequins, buttons and ribbon.

Tips & Warnings
Using the sewing machine, attach ribbons or additional felt shapes to the top cut out shape of your felt ornament prior to attaching the top to the bottom felt piece.
If your shape is intricate or has tight corners, stitch the top felt to the bottom felt before cutting out.
The freezer paper will have sticking power to use again on a number of felt ornaments.
