The Hard Side Waterbed comes in non-standard sizes only. They are California King, California Queen and Super Single. They require special bedding, which is available most places that sell sheets or at your local waterbed dealer.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • tape measure
  1. Step 1

Measure your bed, California King is 85 inches by 80 inches, California Queen is 75 inches by 80 inches and Super Single is 40 by 80 inches. This is the size of the mattress.

  2. Step 2

Shop for sheets that suit your décor and style. Waterbed sheets come in a variety of styles and colors, from cotton to satin. There is bound to be one that will suit your taste. They are available at any store that sells sheets, and will be labeled as to size-California King, California Queen, or Super Single.

  3. Step 3

Purchase waterbed sheets as a set. The fitted bottom sheet is attached to the top sheet, so that they don’t get separated when they are on the bed. There are usually two pillow cases with this set as well.Blankets and comforters may come in the set, or may be purchased separately.

  4. Step 4

Purchase a mattress cover the same size as your sheets. It keeps the temperature of the bed even, especially where it meets your skin. This is the best investment you will ever make.

  5. Step 5

Making a waterbed can be a challenge, especially if your bed is flush against the wall. Ideally, you need at least enough space to move between the bed and the wall.

  6. Step 6

Put the mattress cover on first. This will have elastic straps that go under the corners of the mattress. Start at one top corner (usually the hardest one to get to), then move to the opposite bottom corner. Then go to the other top corner and lastly, the bottom corner.

  7. Step 7

Put the sheets on in the same fashion as the mattress cover. Starting at the top corner, going to the opposite bottom corner and so on. Waterbed sheets are attached to eachother, so when you get to the bottom corner you are tucking in the top sheet as well as the corner pocket of the bottom sheet. You may feel at some point like you are trying to dress a waterballoon, it will slip and slide, but once you get the corner into the pocket of the sheet, it will stay there until you pull it out.

  8. Step 8

Toss the comforter or bedspread on the bed, letting it hang off the foot and sides. This is much easier than trying to tuck it in. It looks very nice as well.

Tips & Warnings
  • Regular King, Queen or Twin size sheets and comforters will not fit on a waterbed.

on 12/20/2008 Dear Ms. Mason,

The wood frame waterbed mattress sizes mentioned in Step 1 are in error. A Cal King mattress is 72" wide x 84" long, Queen is 60" x 84" and Super Single is 48" x 84".
