Feeding a pet hamster treats may be fun, but it may also be adding to their little waistlines. Be sure your pet hamster has a balance between his diet and his exercise.

    • 2

Let your pet run in a hamster running ball to give your pet hamster some much needed exercise and time out of his cage. There are several sizes of hamster running balls at your local pet store. Be sure you choose the size that is correct for your hamster.

Watching your pet hamster use a hamster running ball can be just as much fun for him as it is for you! Be sure to clear a flat surface for him to run. Kitchen floors, or other smooth surfaces seem to work best. Be sure to block off any steps or other potential road hazards, such as the pet dog!

Playing in a small animal fence is another good way to exercise your hamster. The small fences can be purchased at your local pet store, and provide an instant playground area for your pet. I have used mine outside in the grass, on a hard floor in the house, and even on carpet.

Add a few hamster toys to the small animal fence playground, and your hamster is sure to wake up and play for awhile. There are many toys on the market for hamsters including wooden see-saws, tubes, miniature furniture and even picnic tables complete with bowls for a healthy snack!

Running on a hamster wheel inside the hamster cage is another good option for your hamster to get a little exercise. The hamster running wheel should always be available, for those late night work out sessions. However, a variety of free-standing wheels are available that could be added to a hamster playground.

Climbing, running and investigating you is another way your hamster can exercise. While watching a show on TV, take your hamster out of his cage and let him climb on your shirt and investigate you! The bonding time will be appreciated by both you and the hamster.

Tips & Warnings

  • Reward your hamster with a healthy treat after his work out. They love fresh baby carrots, fresh spinach leaves, mealworms and even an unsalted peanut!

  • Never leave your hamster unattended while he is outside of his cage.
