How to Get Rid of Mold in a Home

If you find mold in your home, it is imperative to remove it immediately. You should work on getting rid of the mold even before you start to look for the source of the mold, because mold can be very harmful to your family's health.

• Rubber gloves
• Bleach
• Water
• Bucket
• Face mask
• Scrub brush

Instructions

1. Remove wet items from the area affected by mold and set them out in the sunlight if possible. If you have wet items of clothing or similar items, wash them in hot water and bleach, if possible. Pour a cup of bleach into the washing machine during the rinse cycle and make sure the items dry completely.

2. Open windows and doors in any rooms that have mold. Leave the windows open while you clean, so that you don't inhale mold spores or too many fumes from the bleach.

3. Clean affected areas with a bleach solution. You can use an over the counter pre-made bleach spray product, or make your own by mixing one cup of bleach into a gallon of hot water. Wear rubber gloves and a face mask and wash the affected areas with the bleach solution. Use a stiff brush if possible. Rinse well with clear water and allow the area to dry well. Use a fan if neccesary.

4. Lower the humidity in your home to get keep mold from spreading or to prevent it from occurring in the first place. Use fans, run your home's air conditioner, open windows or install a dehumidifier in your home.

5. Use light in the room that has mold. Mold grows best in dark, damp areas. Sunlight is ideal, but artificial light works well, too. If you don't have lighting in the room, install some. If you do already have lights in the room, try using brighter bulbs.
