How to Apply to Emigrate to Australia

Australia is an immigrant nation: The vast majority of its 20 million citizens are descended from Western European settlers. With a prosperous and expanding economy, the continent has seen its population explode, due in part to an aggressive immigration policy. To compensate for a shortage of skilled workers, Australia is continuing to open its doors to qualified candidates through its General Skilled Migration Program. Here’s how to meet the requirements to emigrate to Australia.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact the Australian government's Department of Immigration and Citizenship to obtain all necessary forms. You must be at least 18 years old, but no older than 45, and demonstrate the ability to communicate on a vocational level in the English language.

    • 2

Obtain the Skilled Occupations list, Form 1121i, from the Australian government's Department of Immigration and Citizenship. Select an appropriate occupation as your Nominated Occupation. You must have post-secondary qualifications relating to this occupation. Arrange with the Australian assessing authority designated for your Nominated Occupation to have your skills tested.

    • 3

Undergo a medical examination. Arrange to have your general health assessed by a panel doctor. Be prepared to have your character evaluated as well.

    • 4

Take a Points Test to qualify for your Nominated Occupation. Points are awarded based on a number of factors, including skill, age, language, work experience, demand for occupation and others.

    • 5

Sign the Australian Values Statement confirming your willingness to respect the freedom and dignity of the individual, freedom of religion, commitment to the rule of law, Parliamentary democracy, equality of men and women and a spirit of egalitarianism that embraces mutual respect, tolerance, fair play and compassion for those in need and pursuit of the public good.
