Cleaning a navel piercing is an important step in ensuring your new piercing will heal properly. You will need to clean not only the piercing site, but also the jewelry, while it is still being worn.

    • 2

Don't try to clean your navel piercing on the day you have the piercing done. The site and jewelry should still be clean from being sanitized before the procedure. The first few days after your navel has been pierced, you should leave the piercing alone.

    • 3

Allow water from a shower or bath to come in contact with the piercing, but don't actively touch your navel piercing for the first week. Be sure to run clear water over the piercing site, so no soap remains in the area to agitate the piercing.

    • 4

After one week, you can begin to clean your navel piercing. You may notice a crust forming around the two holes of your navel piercing site. This is a normal part of healing. This scab should not be painful, bloody or have any pus. If it does, you may have an infection and should apply antibiotic ointment. If it doesn't heal in a few days, see a doctor.

    • 5

Once your navel has had some time to heal from the piercing, you may begin to clean your navel piercing during a shower. Allow warm water to flow over the piercing. Gently lather the area with soap, and rotate the ring, or slide the barbell so that the jewelry and the piercing site are being cleansed. Be sure to rinse the area completely with clear water.

    • 6

After a shower, dry the navel piercing with cotton swabs. Avoid rotating or sliding the piercing outside the shower until it is fully healed. Navel piercings can take 3 months to a year to fully heal. You don't want to introduce bacteria to the site by accident.

    • 7

After exercise, or excessive sweating, be sure to wash the piercing site with warm soapy water, and rinse with clear water.

  • Don't change your navel jewelry until your navel has fully healed. It can easily become infected!

  • If your navel piercing is ever hot, itchy or has drainage it may be infected. A topical antibiotic ointment may be applied, but if it doesn't clear up in a day or two see a physician.

Also, to speed up healing - I have found that using Epsom Salts works great. 2 tbsp. in a small cup of warm water - soak for 10 - 15 mins every day.

When I got my naval piercing done, my piercing artist instructed me to clean my piercing 3 to 6 times daily with salt water (H2 Ocean was recommended, but he said that boiled and cooled salt water works well too. He also instructed me not use and antibacterial ointment for the first 3 weeks of the healing process because it can heal the piercing incorrectly. Please, do not follow these cleaning instructions.

No, do not take bath's with an un-healed piercing; the bathtub hosts much bacteria. Also, cleaning it the day of isn't necessary but afterwords it definitely is; don't wait a week or however long this says. Other than that this is generally correct.
