Golf is a very complicated game, and the player must be prepared to hit a number of different types of shots. One of the most common is the chip shot, which is used to put your ball on the green from close range. It's very easy to learn; here are the basics.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Lofted golf club
  1. Step 1

Select a club with a high loft. A sand wedge or pitching wedge usually work well, but a 9 -iron can also be used in a pinch.

  2. Step 2

Position the ball in the middle of your stance. It should be the usual distance from your feet.

  3. Step 3

Choke up on the club, using your regular grip.

  4. Step 4

Take a short back swing, keeping your wrists firm, and hit down on the ball.

  5. Step 5

Follow through. If you have executed the shot correctly, the ball should pop up into the air and roll for a short distance.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure to keep your wrists firm throughout the shot. Throwing them out in front of you or dragging them behind you will affect the flight of the ball.
  • Don't change the speed of your swing. Let the length of your backswing affect the strength of the shot.
  • Don't try to "scoop" the ball: The loft on the shot comes from the downward chopping motion of the chip.
