Talking to your teenager about sex and drugs isn't always easy. Reading this article will teach you how to talk to your teenager about sex.

From Quick Guide: Guide to Safe Sex
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Encourage them to come to you with any questions. When talking to your teens about sex you want them to know that they can come to you about anything regarding the matter. You also want to establish a good level of trust regarding this subject. It is recommended that you don't try to be a hardcore parent when trying to talk to your kids about sex; instead, be calm and listen to what they have to say and never be the only one talking. Sex talk with teens is more trust and confidentiality than it is strictness or tough love.

  2. Step 2

Encourage safe sex. When talking to your kids, don't openly suggest that they should or should not have sex. Instead, you should tell your kids about both sides of the issue and include the benefits and risks of each. For example, don't tell your kids not to have sex just tell them if they get old enough and want to try it, encourage them to practice safe sex using either a condom or a contraceptive such as birth control.

  3. Step 3

Teach them that abstinence is always an option. On the flip side of that, you should also explain to your kids the risks of having unprotected sex and the benefits of abstinence. Instead of openly telling your child to have sex, tell them that they can always wait to have sex and that it is the only way to 100% avoid pregnancy and STDs. Encourage your child to do whatever is comfortable for them to do as long as they are being safe when doing so.

Tips & Warnings
  • That first talk you have with your teen about sex will be the hardest but it could leave a lasting impression about the subject.
