How to Make Flowers With Ribbons

Making flowers with ribbons is a special way to add pizazz to a special bridal shower gift or a birthday present. Ribbon flowers have many other uses as well. You could use several to make a flower patch on a wall, or attach one with a holiday theme to your front door around November and December! Vary the colors and patterns of the ribbons, and you will find yourself easily making all kinds of flowers from ribbons!

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

• 7/8 in. Woven Ribbons
• Matching Fabric Colored Buttons
• Ruler or Measuring Tape
• Needle
• Thread

Large Ribbon Flowers

1. Cut out four pieces of ribbon that are 13 inches in length a piece.

2. Take two pieces of ribbon, and overlap them at right angles to each other. Both pieces should form a cross. Be sure they are face up.

3. Lay the additional two ribbons over the first ones so they form an "X." Make sure all ribbons are face up.

4. Take a threaded needle, and push through the center of all the ribbons from front to back. Pull thread clear through to the knot.

5. Turn the ribbons over so they are wrong side up.

6. Fold the end of one ribbon into the center, and sew this piece in place by bringing the needle back up through the center of the ribbons. Repeat with each ribbon until they are all folded in to the center and sewn in place. This will all create the petals of the flower.

7. Stitch through the center of the flower several times to make it secure. Tie off the thread.

8. Attach the covered button in the middle of the flower on the right side. Sew in place.

9. Enjoy your large flower by placing it wherever you like!

Small Ribbon Flowers

10. Cut out three pieces of ribbon that are six inches in length a piece.

11. Overlap two pieces of ribbon across each other. They should be placed face up, and the two ribbons should form an "X."

12. Lay the one additional ribbon horizontally across the other two. Make sure the ribbons are face up.

13. Take a threaded needle, and push the needle through the center of all the ribbons from front to back. Pull thread clear through to the knot.

14. Turn the ribbons over so they are wrong side up. Fold the ends of one ribbon into the center, and sew it in place by bringing the needle back up through the center of the ribbons. Repeat with each ribbon until they are all folded in to the center. They should all be sewn in place at this time. This process forms the petals of the flower.

15. Stitch through the center of the flower several times to make it secure, and tie off the thread.

16. Attach the covered button in the middle of the flower on the right side. Sew in place.

17. Enjoy your small flower by placing it in the place of your choice.

Tips & Warnings

• Use different width ribbon for different looks.
• Use ribbons that keep their shape for best results.
• Don't make flower ribbons if you are in a hurry. A rushed ribbon flower will look worse than simply adding the ribbon to the gift as is. You should set aside a few minutes to properly create a ribbon flower!
