How to Color Glass Etchings

Glass etchings are beautiful pieces of art, suitable for many locations. They are beautiful without color but sometimes color is desired. Adding color is an easy process, similar to regular painting. Many different types of paint may be used, such as rub-on metallic pastes, acrylic paints or other paints, which are harder to rub off of the glazed surface of glass etchings.

Tips & Warnings

  • Apply paint to a small area at a time and wipe away from the area to avoid wiping paint into areas where it is not wanted.

  • Colors are not completely permanent and will wear off if handled or washed often but can be made more permanent with high gloss sealer.

  • When using metallic paint, sometimes a haze will be seen over the glazed area due to the residue left behind. Allow it to dry for ten to fifteen minutes and then wipe the haze off with a tissue.
