    1. How to Identify the Cause of Vasomotor Rhinitis

      • 1

Understand that Vasomotor Rhinitis occurs when nasal blood vessels dilate or expand, causing an excess of blood and fluid to enter the nasal lining. When the nasal lining is inflamed the result may be Vasomotor Rhinitis. This abnormality presents the symptoms of running nose, sneezing and congestion because the already confined area is swollen and congested.

Know that deductive reasoning and a doctor's examination (necessary for ruling out more serious diseases with similar symptoms) is the main way to manage this short lived nuisance or long term annoyance (depending on the frequency and duration of the symptoms). Vasomotor Rhinitis is not life threatening but can effect lifestyle. Deductive reasoning is important because the cause of Vasomotor Rhinitis is not set in stone because there are many triggers. One of the many ways to manage this disease is to avoid possible triggers.

Deduce what may be at the root of Vasomotor Rhinitis with or without a doctor's input once major issues have been ruled out. An infection from the common cold or flu could trigger Vasomotor Rhinitis and usually dissipates over time. Overuse of over-the-counter nasal sprays can also be a cause of the rhinitis as they can inflame the membrane if used for too many consecutive days. Drugs that effect blood flow can cause Vasomotor Rhinitis. Anything from aspirin to blood pressure medication to erectile dysfunction medication can cause a plethora of blood to enter the nasal lining. Spicy foods and alcoholic beverages are a known cause since the body reacts to them by causing swelling in the nasal passages. Hormone changes from pregnancy, menstruation and contraceptives can cause Vasomotor Rhinitis. Stress, change in the weather and exposure to environmental irritants can also trigger Vasomotor Rhinitis.

Go to your doctor and have him or her rule out serious issues. Then figure what of these possibilities triggers your Vasomotor Rhinitis. Perhaps only one or many factor into your symptoms. Cut them out and see if there is an improvement. In cases where chronic symptoms plague you, there are treatments such as oral decongestants, saline sprays (to flush out the nasal passages) antihistamines and corticosteroid nasal sprays.
