There’s nothing like a cuddly pair of hand knit socks to warm little feet on a cool evening. This pair of soft toddler socks sports a classic ribbed cuff, just as cute folded down as left up. The pattern is easy to knit for a child between ages 2 to 5, with short-row heels and a tapered yet easy to finish toe. Use the following gauge yarn: 5 sts. and 7 rows to one inch.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • One ball sport weight yarn--wool or acrylic blend
  • Size 4 double-point knitting needles
  • Darning needle
  • Scissors
  1. Step 1

Cast on 28 stitches loosely. Divide stitches among three needles: 14 on one needle, seven on each of the other two needles.

  2. Step 2

Knit in two by two ribbing (two stitches knit, two stitches purl) for 22 rows. Knit stockinette for six rows.

  3. Step 3

Begin heel on needle containing 14 stitches. Knit to last stitch, hold yarn in back of work, slip stitch onto the right needle and turn the work. Slip stitch to rthe ight needle again, which results in a “wrap” around the stitch. Move the yarn to front of work and slip the next stitch.

  4. Step 4

Purl to the last stitch, hold the yarn in front of the work, slip stitch to the right needle and turn the work. Slip stitch to the right needle, move the yarn to back of work and slip the next stitch. Repeat the wrapping process, each time moving in one stitch one each end, until 4 stitches on each side are wrapped.

  5. Step 5

Knit six. Knit the next stitch and its wrap together. Move the yarn to the back of the work, slip stitch to the right needle and turn the work. Slip stitch to the right needle again, move the yarn to the front of work and slip the next stitch.

  6. Step 6

Purl to the first wrapped stitch, purl stitch and wrap together. Move the yarn to the front of the work, slip stitch to the right needle and turn the work. This will create a double-wrap. Slip stitch to the right needle, move the yarn to back of the work, then slip the next stitch. Repeat this process, knitting through both wraps along with the stitch when you get to those that are wrapped twice.

  7. Step 7

Knit around in stockinette stitch for 22 rows. Begin decrease for toe on the needle containing 14 stitches: knit one, knit two together, knit to last three stitches. Slip one, knit one, pass slipped stitch over, knit one. On second needle knit one, knit two together, knit to end. On third needle, knit to last three stitches, slip one, knit one, pass slipped stitch over, knit one. Knit one row. Repeat these two rows four times. Cut yarn. Thread tail through darning needle and pass through remaining 12 stitches. Weave in ends and trim excess.
