This is the perfect little stocking ornament for any knitting devotee’s holiday tree. The pattern is easy, lightening fast, and offers endless possibilities for creativity. This pattern assumes a basic knowledge of knitting.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Worsted weight yarn in 2 colors
  • Size 6 double-point knitting needles
  1. Step 1

Cast on 12 stitches in white yarn (or desired contrast color). Divide stitches as six stitches on one needle and three stitches on each of the remaining two needles.

  2. Step 2

Knit five rows in garter stitch; when knitting in the round, garter stitch is achieved by alternating knit and purl rows.

  3. Step 3

Join main color yarn to your work and cut the contrast color. Knit 14 rows in stockinette stitch.

  4. Step 4

Make heel using short rows: on the needle holding the six stitches, knit to last stitch, hold yarn in back of work, slip stitch onto right needle and turn work. Slip stitch to right needle again, which results in a “wrap” around the stitch. Move yarn to front of work and slip next stitch.

  5. Step 5

Purl to last stitch, hold yarn in front of work, slip stitch to right needle and turn work. Slip stitch to right needle, move yarn to back of work and slip next stitch. Repeat wrapping process, this time working the next to the last stitch on each end.

  6. Step 6

Knit to the next to the last stitch (this will be the first wrapped stitch). Knit the stitch and the wrap together. Move the yarn to the back of the work, slip stitch to right needle and turn work. Slip stitch to the right needle again, move yarn to the front of the work and slip next stitch.

  7. Step 7

Purl to the first wrapped stitch, purl stitch and wrap together. Move the yarn to front of the work, slip stitch to the right needle and turn work. Slip stitch to the right needle, move yarn to the back of the work, then slip next stitch. Repeat this process again, knitting through both wraps when you get to the stitches that are wrapped twice.

  8. Step 8

Knit around the remaining needles, continuing the stockinette stitch in the round for 10 rows. Decrease for the toe beginning on the needle with six stitches: knit two together, knit to the last two stitches, slip one, knit one, pass slipped stitch over. On next needle: knit two together, knit to end of needle. On last needle: knit to last two stitches, slip one, knit one, pass slipped stitch over.

  9. Step 9

Cut the yarn and use a darning needle to pass the tail through all stitches. Pull tight, thread the tail through to the inside of the stocking and weave in the ends.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use eyelash yarn for a fluffy cuff.
  • Stick a piece of candy inside and attach to a gift for a unique touch.
