1. Visit thrift stores in your area. Most second-hand stores sell accessories such as hats and purses. You can uncover neat finds at thrift stores. Check back frequently so you can see their latest offerings.

2. Go to weekend garage sales in your neighborhood. People will often sell clothing and accessories at garage sales, and hats are no exception. You may be able to find some attractive hats at greatly discounted prices. Garage sale prices are sometimes lower than thrift stores or online auction prices, simply due to the person wanting to get rid of things at the sale.

3. Check out online auction sites like eBay. There are literally a plethora of hats available on such sites. Almost all the sellers will list photos of the hat for sale and you can enter the maximum price you want to pay for the hat. Remember to look for shipping and any additional costs such as shipping insurance prior to bidding. If you win the auction, you must follow through and make the purchase.

4. Browse chain thrift stores such as Goodwill and The Salvation Army. Both places always receive lots of donations and have sections devoted to accessories. You can find hats greatly discounted at these locations.

5. Inspect the hat fully before purchasing it. Make sure there are no loose seams or holes in it. You also want to ensure that any elastic isn't worn out. If you notice any major flaws in the hat but still like it, see if you can bargain down the price to account for the issues. You can then always replace the elastic or re-sew the seams if necessary.

6. Make sure you have a means of paying for the used hat. Most online auction sites like eBay offer a few methods of payment, depending on the seller's preference. Virtually all sellers accept PayPal or a money order. Keep in mind that payment will have to be received by the seller prior to sending the hat to you. Thrift stores usually accept cash, check or credit card. Those selling items at garage sales usually want cash as the method of payment.
