Things You'll Need:
- Flat-head screwdriver
-
Step 1
Remove any necessary trim and/or molding from the door. The trim houses the door-jam and is often held in place by two small screws. Unscrew both screws and wedge the trim out carefully, so as not to damage the integrity of the door.
-
Step 2
Remove the two longer screws that are cased between both doorknobs. One screw will be attached to each side of the doorknob. Be careful not to damage either screw, or you will be forced to make a trip to the hardware store. The doorknobs sometimes fall out of place after this step, so make sure that you keep a set of hands underneath them at all times.
-
Step 3
Pull the doorknobs out of the door if they do not fall out after step 2. If your door has a lock, remove the two large screws that keep the door lock secure.
-
Step 4
Inspect both doorknobs. Look for any damage to their structural integrity as well as damage to the door-jam (or lock). Rust, damaged parts and minor stripping of screws are but a few of the problems that can contribute to a malfunctioning doorknob.
-
Step 5
Follow each step carefully and then assess whether you need to purchase a new doorknob set or simply clean and repair your existing doorknob.
