1
Wash the jar thoroughly and let it dry. Make sure that you wipe any traces of water out of the jar. Do not put any fingerprints on the outside of the jar where you will be painting. Fingerprint smudges will cause the paint to look messy in appearance.
-
2
Place the jar on top of newspapers to protect the surface as you paint. You may create a pattern with the words that you wish to paint on the jar. Draw your words on the paper and cut the paper to size to fit the jar. Tape the paper inside of the jar so that the words show on the outside.

3
Trace the words using the etching cream, following your pattern in detail. Keep a steady hand and avoid shaking. Leave the jar alone until the etching cream is completely dry.

4
Put a darker color on your plastic plate. Dip a thin paint brush into the paint. Trace around the etching cream, adding a shadow on the left of the letters. Continue until you have covered each letter. Let the paint dry thoroughly. Once your jar has dried thoroughly, you may rinse it off to remove any traces of extra paint. Be careful that you do not smudge your lettering.
