A password re-set disk can be indispensable if you forget your computer password. Using the Password Reset Wizard on the disk, you will be able to create a new password to replace the forgotten one. Read on to learn how to create and use a password re-set disk for Windows XP.

Things You'll Need:

  • Formatted blank floppy
  • System running Windows XP

    Create a Password Re-set Disk

  1. Step 1
     

    Click on your "Start" button, and click on "Control Panel." In the "Pick a category," window, click on "User Accounts."

  2. Step 2
     

    Click on the account name for which you want to create a password reset disk. This takes you to the "Related Tasks" section.

  3. Step 3

    Click on "Prevent a forgotten password." Click on "Next" in the "Welcome to the Forgotten Password Wizard" page.

  4. Step 4

    Insert your floppy disk into the floppy drive. If needed, choose the disk drive that you want to use. Click on "Next." Type in your password. Click on "Next" again.

  5. Step 5

    Once the "Forgotten Password Wizard" has created your password reset disk, click on Next and then click "Finish."

  6. Step 6

    Remove the password-reset disk. Keep it in a secure place. It is essential that you keep your reset disk safe, because anyone who gets access to it can use it to gain access to your PC without needing your password.

    If you forget your password, follow the steps below to reset it.

    Go to the Windows welcome screen. Instead of inputting your password, click on the link in the balloon that reads "Use your password reset disk." Windows will remember that you created a password reset disk. Click on "Next."

  10. Step 2

    Insert your password reset disk into its drive. Click on "Next." Type in a new password. Type it in again to confirm. If you like, set a password hint.

  11. Step 3

    Click on "Next," and then click on "Finish."

  12. Step 4

    Log onto your PC with your new password.

Tips & Warnings
  • Your password reset disk will remain valid until you create a new one, regardless of whether or not you change your password. This makes it even more important that you keep the disk safe. If you ever lose your disk, create a new one as soon as you can. Once a new once is created, then the old disc can no longer be used.
